PATU, Santiago, Chile (24-10-2023). The Dominican Republic's women's Team Kyorugui entered the history books by winning the first edition of this modality in the Pan American Games, with a victory over the Mexican team, on the last day of taekwondo actions in Santiago 2023.
Olympians Katherine Rodriguez, Mayerlin Mejia and Madelyn Rodriguez were part of the Dominican trio that shone in style at the Contact Sports Center located at the National Stadium Sports Complex in Santiago de Chile.
The Caribbean women defeated in the final 54-44 the Mexican team, which included world champion Leslie Soltero and international multi-medalists Fabiola Villegas and Victoria Heredia.
In the quarterfinals, the girls, led by coaches Enmanuele Mateo and Carlos Maldonado, overcame the Colombian trio of Andrea Ramirez, Gloria Mosquera and Laura Ramirez.
In the semifinal round, the Dominicans won an important victory over the Cuban team, 33-31.
Mexico won the silver medal, while the bronze medals went to the Cuban team (Arlettys Acosta, Frislaidys Martínez and Marlyn Pérez) and the Brazilian team (Sandy Macedo, María Clara Pacheco and Caroline Santos).
Team Kyorugui made its debut in these Pan American Games Santiago 2023, after making its debut in the last Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023, where the winning team was Mexico.
This modality is making its way into the Olympic Movement, and Santiago 2023 was the stage for its world premiere in multisport events around the world.
